Youth Music Theatre: UK receives funding from a wide range of trusts and foundations for many aspects of our work - from individual projects to our core operating costs. Below are some case studies of the organisations that have supported us, followed by a full list. YMT: UK acknowledges the Foundation for Sports and the Arts as a major supporter of the company. During our set-up phase, the Foundation for Sports and the Arts underwrote their confidence and belief in what we with a long term interest free loan. This allowed us to fully invest in a high quality arts programme which enables young people from all social backgrounds to have access to the transforming experience of our intensive and creative musical theatre courses. We received the support of the Musicians Benevolent Fund in 2007, receiving funds which allowed us to commission a full length book and score entitled Dance! A cast of 40 young talented performers congregated in Belfast to rehearse and perform this exciting piece based on one of the bloodiest stories from the Old Testament, addressing an issue which is as relevant today as it was then: why should young people suffer because of where they are from or because of the family they have been born into?
Thanks to a generous grant from the Brit Trust, YMT: UK was able to invest in a newly commissioned musical theatre production of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novel Mort, which has been developed over several years from a workshop production in Manchester and culminating in a fully-staged run at Guildford's Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in August 2008. Writer Jeni Toksvig was commissioned to adapt the novel - Jeni is a graduate of the Musical Theatre Writing Programme of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, and administrator of Mercury Musical Developments which supports writers and composers of musical theatre.
Since June 2004 YMT: UK has received a series of awards from the Mackintosh Foundation. The Mackintosh awards have gone towards supporting our artistic programme of both residential and non-residential musical theatre courses. Core funding is essential to the company. It allows us to continue to challenge the boundaries of musical theatre for young people and enables us to offer them continuous opportunities to become involved with the creation of new and original productions. Youth Music Theatre: UK gratefully acknowledges financial support from the PRS Foundation. The Performing Rights Society has, for several years running, supported the core work of YMT: UK, demonstrating their belief that we are at the forefront of youth arts for new musical theatre. The latest award will allow us to continue to develop an ongoing access programme and ensure all young people have the opportunity to participate in our courses. Other Trusts and Foundations
