Clare's directing work crosses theatre, music theatre and opera and she trained at both The Universities of Leeds and Hull and at the Royal National Theatre Studio.

She is artistic director of the project based theatre company refraction, working with new composers on a range of projects at Battersea Arts Centre. Clare has also run the 150-strong Perth Youth Theatre, Scotland, and been Education and Outreach Officer for Perth Theatre.
Freelance work has been for: The Young Vic Theatre, The National Youth Music Theatre, Hampstead Garden Opera, Bel Canto Festival Opera, The Liverpool Everyman Playhouse, C Theatres in Edinburgh & in co-production with The Pleasance, London, Greenwich Playhouse and toured for English National Opera Studio. She is a full member of the Director's Guild of Great Britain and the Young Vic Director's Forum. As well as directing 'straight' Shakespeare Clare devised and wrote Romeo and Juliet - The Panto! and Macbeth- The Panto! for the Shakespeare For Breakfast at the Edinburgh Festivals 2002 and 2003.

(Edinburgh 2003); The Snow Queen (Edinburgh Festival 2003); Bed - a devised musical for Mountview Academy; Crimes of Passion: The Ruffian on the Stair and The Erpingham Camp (Greenwich Playhouse, London); Romeo and Juliet - The Panto (Edinburgh Festival & transfer to the Pleasance Theatre, London); On Eagle's Wings (Liverpool Everyman); Goddesses, Tin Pan Ali (National Youth Music Theatre at Milton Keynes Theatre), The Comedy of Errors, The Taming of the Shrew (Cambridge Shakespeare Festival); Private View (New Shakespeare Company), Did You Ever Send Your Wife to Camberwell? and Postcards From Andalucia (Battersea Arts Centre); Songs of Solomon (Diorama Arts Centre), The Bald Prima Donna (National Student Theatre Company); As Staff Director at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre Clare worked on: Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Pirates of Penzance (Summer 2000).

Opera credits include: Il Trittico (Hampstead Garden Opera), Manon (English Touring Opera), Macbeth (Bel Canto Festival  Opera) and the World premiere of The Murder of Charlotte Dymond  for Music Theatre Kernow (The Hall for Cornwall). Clare was Staff Producer on Tour for English Touring Opera's productions of: The Magic Flute and The Rake's Progress and recently on Vernon Mound's production of Les Pecheurs De Perles for Opera Holland Park, UK tour of Six-Pack, six contemporary operas for English National Opera Studio/Tete-a-Tete.

Current/Future Projects: Clare will write and direct two shows for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2004 and is working on a new musical set in a lift with composer Craig Adams. With her own company, refraction, she will work with composer Andrew Green on a musical adaptation of Keats' narrative poem Isabella or The Pot of Basil for production in 2004/5. Clare remains an associate and co-founder of the music theatre workshop company Harmony Works with soprano, Helen Astrid.
