When we’re young, most of us want to be in the coolest gang. But when does being in a gang become dangerous or harmful to its members and those outside? What is gang culture all about? What’s it like to be left out of a gang? What feels good about being in one? We’ll look at the pros and cons of gangs, the individuals that make them up, and what these groups both create and destroy. We’ll investigate the factors that make gangs such as age, location, ethnicity, religion, family ties. We’ll examine the difference in male and female involvement. And we’ll do this by creating stories and following through what happens to those both in and out of the gang. Knowledge is power – we can learn how gangs work, understand them and see how we as individuals can get caught up in a ‘gang mentality’ for example, as football fans, or when we jeer the French when London wins the Olympic bid. There are some great musicals featuring gangs, such as West Side Story and Grease. This is our chance to make our own for the twenty-first century! Bring along your thoughts, your experiences and any research you want to do and we’ll put it into the process. Now, do you want to join this gang?
