YMT: UK’s principal aim is the personal and creative development of young people, delivered through the medium of musical theatre.

Its objectives, to be delivered through its Five Year Business Plan, are:

  • to develop opportunities for all young people to undertake a  journey of creative exploration and self-discovery
  • to offer scope for the most talented to develop their skills to the greatest extent
  • to engage with young people in areas of social need, providing opportunities for all, regardless of social background.
  • to offer opportunities to young people in all four countries of the British Isles and all its variety of regions.
  • to create innovative new works of music theatre.
  • to involve young people at all levels of creativity and decision-making, and to provide unique training opportunities, whether artistic, technical, or administrative.
  • To embrace diversity of all kinds, whether age, gender, culture, ethnicity or regional, and ensure it is integral to every aspect of the organisation.

Music theatre embraces many musical genres, from chamber opera to pop, rock and rap. It is an art form that lends itself particularly well to working with young people, perhaps because it has something to offer everyone – acting, singing, dancing, movement and making music. As a creative process it is uniquely collaborative.
